Meet IU faculty teaching online
Hannah Klawa
IU East Mathematics Professor Hannah Klawa focuses on building community within her online classes and within the community of students and faculty. What guides her teaching is a growth mindset. She encourages curiosity and asking questions and learning for learning’s sake. “I focus on learning, not perfection. I love helping people improve their skill. When students make a mistake, I want to know whether it’s simply a mistake, or whether they need more help understanding the material,” she says. She holds an MS and PhD in Mathematics from George Mason University.
Markus Pomper
Markus Pomper, Dean of the IU East School of Natural Science and Mathematics, sees learning as a social undertaking. The IU Online Mathematics program strives to create a community of engagement among faculty and students, with discussions, math club, colloquium, honors, outside speakers, peer support, faculty-student research, and collaboration and mentoring that extends beyond classroom walls. The online format accommodates activities difficult or impossible in person, like collaboratively developing mathematical proofs, and engaging with a worldwide community of classmates, whose backgrounds and professions immeasurably enrich discussion.
Chris Harle
Professor Chris Harle is a professor in the Master of Health Administration (MHA) and chair of the Department of Health Policy and Management. The MHA is a professional program that primes students for management and leadership roles across the healthcare workforce. In fall 2024 The MHA is being offered online in eight-week semesters, to provide flexible, accessible access to students with careers and families. The online format erases barriers to experts and knowledge, and accommodates curated knowledge from the internet, enabling experiences not otherwise possible in a physical classroom. The student-centered design focuses on content students need most.
