Indiana University’s (IU’s) spring 2025 census numbers show continued growth in the university’s highly successful IU Online programs.
Seven new programs have been added since August 2024, bringing to 196 the number of degree and certificate programs offered online. Developed and taught by IU faculty, the degrees include 53 collaborative programs offered through multiple IU campuses.
A total of 9,280 students enrolled in online programs this spring, an 11% increase over spring 2024.

Enrollments in the 53 collaborative programs stand at 2,844, an 18.5% increase over spring 2024.
Undergraduate online plan enrollments rose by 17.3% over spring 2024, and graduate online plan enrollments rose by 6.2%.
Applications
Undergraduate online applications are up 26% over spring 2024, while graduate online applications are up 16.4%.
Credit hours
Online hours represent 23% of total university hours, an increase of 22% over spring 2024.
Online hours represent 50% of regional campus credit hours, up from 49% in spring 2024.
Students taking online classes
Students taking at least one online class represent 53% of total university headcount, up from 51% in spring 2024.
Students taking 100% online schedules represent 14% of total university headcount, constant from spring 2024.
Diversity
Ethnicity of online students
9.2% are Black/African-American.
8.6% are Hispanic/Latinx.
5.7% are Asian.
4.5% report being of two or more races.
Gender
62% of the students in online programs are female.
Age
The average age of undergraduate students in online programs is 30, while the average age of on-campus undergraduates is 21.
The average age of graduate students in online programs is 35, compared to the average age of on-campus graduate students, which is 28.
First-generation
29% of online undergraduates are first-generation students, compared to the 15% of on-campus undergraduates who are first-generation.
Veterans/active service
3.6% of online undergraduate students and 3.1% of online graduate students are veterans or active service members compared to 1.1% of on-campus undergraduate and graduate students.
