The number of students involved in online education across the university showed steady growth in fall 2021, emphasizing the central role IU's online learning programs play in helping students meet education, life, and career goals. Official fall census highlights include the following:
- IU Online now offers 204 degree and certificate programs from IU's seven campuses, 38 of which are collaborative offerings involving multiple campuses.
- The number of students enrolled in online programs in fall 2021 grew 10.5 percent over fall 2020 to 8,224, representing 9 percent of the total university headcount. These students represent 55 US states/territories and 68 countries. Fifty-two percent are Indiana residents.
- Some 50,000 students are taking one or more online classes, representing 55 percent of students university-wide, up from about one-third of all students in fall 2019.
- Students taking all their classes online now represent 14 percent of all enrolled students university-wide.
- Graduate enrollment is up 17 percent over fall 2020. Seventeen percent of graduate students are underrepresented students of color and 4.2 percent are veterans or active military. Twenty percent of undergraduates are underrepresented students of color, 34.5 percent are first-generation students, and 6.4 percent are veterans or active military.
- Across the university, online classes (including those taught asynchronously and synchronously) total 261,227 credit hours, a 67 percent increase over fall 2019's pre-pandemic levels. Online credit hours now represent almost one-fourth of total university credit hours.
