The number of students participating in online education across the university—including completely asynchronous classes, as well as synchronous live video classes—continues to grow each semester. Fall official census highlights include the following:
- IU Online now represents 135 degree and certificate programs from IU's seven campuses.
- The percentage of students enrolled in at least one online course grew to 34.4 percent, up from 32.5 percent in fall 2018.
- The number of students taking all of their classes online grew just slightly to 8,678, increasing from 9.3 percent of all students in fall 2018 to 9.4 percent of all IU students in fall 2019.
- The number of students enrolled in online degree, certificate, and non-degree programs rose 10.2 percent over fall 2018 to 6,335.
- Credit hours taken in online classes grew from 12.4 percent of total university hours in fall 2018 to 13.1 percent in fall 2019.
- At the regional campuses, online class credit hours now represent 28 percent of all credit hours.
- IUPUI has the largest number of students taking at least one online course, at 12,209 students, while the Bloomington campus remains the largest enroller of students in online programs at 2,750 students.
- IU East continues to have the largest overall online presence, with 44 percent of its students enrolled in online programs, and 79 percent of its students taking at least one online class in the fall term.
- Across the university, the undergraduate online programs with the highest enrollments are the BS in Business Administration, Bachelor of General Studies, BS in Mathematics, Nursing RN to BSN, and BS in Psychology.
- Across the university, the graduate online programs with the highest enrollments are the MBA, Master of Social Work, Master of Library and Information Science, MS in Data Science, and MS in Finance.
