If you want to learn best practices and practical steps for designing and delivering online courses, the IU Online Faculty Starter Kit is for you. This free, self-paced tutorial, available through the IU Expand portal for online, noncredit coursework, includes 17 modules designed to orient instructors to teaching online at IU. The kit is also a repository for resources on best practices for designing and delivering online courses that you can return to any time.
Modules include an introduction to IU’s collaborative model of online education; guidance for creating courses, syllabi, and assessments; practical information on enhancing online interaction; and tips for managing online teaching.
There are many ways to use the tutorial. You can move through the individual modules sequentially in three to five hours, or select only those you need. If you’re in a hurry, the starter kit includes a Teaching Online Essentials Checklist that provides the basics on designing and teaching an online course.
The concept for the starter kit and its materials is the collaborative effort of multiple university departments, including the Office of Online Education (OOE), the Office of Collaborative Academic Programs (OCAP), eLearning Design and Services (eDS), and University Information Technology Services.
